The Mira Costa boys tennis team defeated Valencia High School 15-3 on May 9, at the Manhattan Beach Country Club in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs. The top performers of the match included junior Matthew Poh for winning all of his sets.

Poh defeated his opponents 6-1, 6-0, and 6-1, while junior Kyle Sillman defeated his opponents 6-1, 6-0, and 6-1.  Senior Evan Fortier was also able to come out with a win defeating his opponents 6-1, 6-4, and 6-1. Doubles pairs, including seniors Ben Chromanski and Shant Samuelian won two of their sets 6-2 and 6-0.

“From the first day of practice our goals have been much higher,” head coach Joe Ciasulli said. “So while any victory is nice, it is not cause for celebration yet.”

The Mustangs are currently 20-1 overall and 9-1 in Bay League.  Costa will head into the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Playoffs against La Canada High School on May 11 at La Canada High School.

“Our goal is to at least make it to the semi-finals,” Ciasulli said. “Anything less would be a disappointment.”
