The Mira Costa boys tennis team defeated La Canada High School, 13-5, in the second round of the southern section of the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs, on May 12 in an away match at La Canada High School. Costa’s top performers included all of the doubles pairings who led a nine set sweep against La Canada.
Senior Shant Samuelian and sophomore Tim Dzhurinskiy won all of their sets 6-4, 6-3, and 6-2. The other duos including senior Ben Chromanski and junior Ethan Han defeated their opponents 6-4, 7-6, and 7-5, while junior Kyle Sillman and freshman Julien Lilla won three sets 6-0, 6-2, and 6-2.
“In a match rescheduled from Friday because of rain, Mira Costa’s doubles pairings played their best tennis of the year, sweeping all nine sets from the Spartans,” head coach Joe Ciasulli said.
The Mustangs are currently 21-1 overall and 9-1 in Bay League. The Mustangs’ next match will be on May 14 in an away match against Corona del Mar High School in the quarterfinals of the southern section California Interscholastic Federation Playoffs.
“This team has been very easy to coach,” Ciasulli said. “When you have great players, coaching is not complicated.”
