Mira Costa’s Badminton team defeated Cabrillo High School 18-3 in the consolation finals of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Team Championships on May 12 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. The top performer of the day was girls singles player sophomore Alisa Chen.
The Mustangs crushed Cabrillo by winning in all of their mixed and girls singles events. Costa took an early lead against the Jaguars, as mixed doubles and girls singles players went undefeated with scores of 21-18, 21-15 and 21-5 and brought home 9 points. While boys singles managed to earn a win out of their four games, boys doubles players Tiger Hao and Henry Yu came out on top, sweeping their opponents 21-18 and 21-14.
“I stayed confident as a captain because I had faith in our team,” junior captain Lulu Yu said. “We were aware of everyone’s skills, talents and perseverance, and we were confident in each individual player.”
The team ended its 2018 season with an overall record of 4-2. Costa was ranked #3 going into the team championship playoffs, and its CIF run ended in the first round of playoffs. The team’s top players senior Scarlett Luo, sophomore Moose Cohn and Lulu Yu were also named runner-ups for the CIF SS Badminton Individual Championships in girls singles and mixed doubles.
“It was the perfect end to the team championships with the best team,” senior Audrey Mei said. “Today’s win is what we’ve been working so hard for, and we all knew we could accomplish it as a team.”
