Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body hosted 28th annual Pride Day on May 19 in order to give students, parents and faculty the opportunity to clean and beautify Costa’s campus.
ASB and Waste Management hosted the event to encourage South Bay residents to give back to their community by cleaning Costa’s campus, ASB Event Coordinator Kenzie Packer said. The event was open to all ages and no sign-up was required to participate
“Our goal was to bring together the South Bay community and Costa students for a good cause,” Packer said. “With so many students walking around Costa for an entire year the campus gets very dirty so it is very rewarding after our work is done.”
Waste Management sponsors the event each year. The company is responsible for hauling Manhattan Beach’s trash and recycling throughout the year.
“We provide green carts so all the green waste collected by the students can be recycled rather than landfilled,” Waste Management Recycling Manager Lisa Ryder said.
Volunteers planted new trees, raked leaves, pulled out old weeds and painted walls. Volunteers cleaned most of Costa’s campus, but focused on cleaning the quad because it is the area most used by Costa students, Packer said.
“The quad is where most of Costa students spend their time outdoors which is why we want to focus on beautifying this area,” ASB Event Coordinator Izzy Youngson said.
ASB members welcomed parent and student volunteers to come any time during the two-and-a-half-hour event. Students and parents also donated supplies, including gardening tools and paint to show their support for the volunteers and event.
“Pride Day was a great success and we definitely accomplished all that we had hoped we would,” Packer said.
