Students at Mira Costa High School take courses during the summer to make up failed classes, or to simply get ahead of their curriculum. Students can choose to take courses through MBUSD’s MBX Foundation, or another program. Taking MBX classes is definitely the best option for summer school because of the variety of classes and convenience.
The MBX program offers a wide variety of athletic courses and students are allowed to take them in combination with the academic curriculum; allowing students to truly have a customizable summer school experience.
Other summer school programs don’t have as many opportunities for students. For example, Redondo Beach Unified School District offers only classes for students who have failed a class. Students who want to get ahead are not able to take classes or get any credits whatsoever. They also only offer Health, Algebra, and Creative writing courses, so students who would like to take any other class are not accommodated.
One drawback attending the MBX summer school would be the price. The prices for the courses at MBX foundation are five hundred dollars and 1,000 dollars; for one Semester credit and two semester credits respectively. In Redondo Beach Unified School District, the tuition is two hundred and fifty dollars and five hundred and fifty dollars for one semester credit and two semester credits respectively. Although, other summer schooling options may be cheaper altogether, MBX foundation offers need-based scholarships if students consult their respective counselors. The MBX foundation also offers courses students can take online. This accommodates students who are traveling, or prefer who work at their own pace.
Another big advantage in taking courses through the MBX foundation would be the process of registering. Registering is made easy through the MBX website, and students will automatically get credit if they follow the code of conduct. However, when students are taking courses through different programs they must confirm that Mira Costa High School takes any credit from that specific summer school to make sure that the deserved credit is received. Finding and confirming summer school courses is a time consuming activity and it is much easier to attend the MBX foundation summer school.
Despite the outrageously expensive price, MBX is often an option many MBUSD students choose because it is convenient and it can even help incoming freshmen become familiar to the new school. Katharine Rogerson, a senior, says that she enjoyed summer school because she was able to familiarize herself with the school before the school year started.
In conclusion, taking summer school through MBX at Mira Costa is the best option for taking class during summer. The benefits like the simplicity of the sign up process definitely outweigh some of the drawbacks.
