Junior Wyatt Saltzman plans to be working side by side with the team that helped evolve the largest aerospace company in the world.

Saltzman is participating in an internship at Boeing for approximately seven weeks in El Segundo during the Summer. Boeing is an aerospace company that manufacturer jetliners, satellites, and other space related systems.

“I have always been interested in engineering, it is what I want to do or major in college at the least,” Saltzman said. “I didn’t hesitate to apply for [the internship], it’s local and a good fit for me.”

Saltzman heard about this opportunity for juniors at Costa through the College and Career Center. Boeing reached out to local high schools and let them nominate approximately four to five students that are qualified for this internship, Saltzman being one of them.

“You gain really valuable experiences doing internships like this,” science, technology, engineering and mathematics, STEM, teacher Leanne Weaver said. “Internships give you a real life experience where your applying what you have know.”

Saltzman currently enrolled in the relatively new principles of engineering course at Costa which teaches the fundamentals of engineering. According to Saltzman, when he is older he plans on working in a STEM related field and is also interested in the business aspect of it.

“In high school, it’s a good time to get a broad spectrum of experiences and find what your interests are and if you already know, you can gear classes towards your career choices,” Weaver said.

Saltzman’s internship starts the day after Costa gets out for Summer and gives students the opportunity for course credit for Costa. Saltzman needs to complete 125 to 150 hours at Boeing from June to early August to receive credit for the class.

“Whether I want to go into aerospace engineering or not, it’s very useful to have actual job experience especially when applying to colleges,” Saltzman said.

Throughout the internship, students were given a list of different positions which would give the administrators an idea of which field the students would want to enter into for a career. According to Saltzman, there are many roles that interns can get assigned too, whether it is testing materials that go into space, or monitoring satellites.

“This internship is going to be very helpful especially if I were to be an engineer or in that field,” Saltzman said. “This will help me to explore my options within this field in order to help me decide what I would want to do when im older.”
