Mira Costa football charges into the new season with a win against St. Francis High School.
The Mustangs defeated St. Francis 27-22 in the team’s first game of the season. Senior quarterback Nick Carpino led the team with successful passes and plays.
“We had been talking about speed being our advantage all week,” senior cornerback Jake Salazar said. “Watching the film we could see that they were slightly sluggish, so we had to adjust and ultimately our efforts paid off.”
Costa started the game strong with a touchdown in the third drive by senior tight end Eddie Burga-Donovan from a pass from Carpino. The Mustangs continued their momentum in the fourth drive, with a run to the end zone by senior quarterback Reed Vabrey, putting Costa up 14-3.
“The touchdown we had in the first quarter was huge for us as it gave us momentum for the rest of the game.” junior wide receiver Jackson Fischer said.
The second half began with a defensive interception from Salazar, that led to a touchdown by senior running back Koda Thormodsgaard. Unfortunately, St. Francis began to have a comeback leading them to score three more touchdowns, but were unable to pull ahead in the end because of Carpino’s last touchdown for Costa.
“We wanted the win more than them and it showed.” senior running back Cole Trejo said. “We stayed calm under the pressure and just did what we had to do.”
The Mustangs, now 1-0 overall, will next compete against La Serna High School in a non-conference game on Friday at home. Throughout September Costa will compete in non-conference games around Los Angeles, and their first Bay League game will be on Sept. 28 at home.
“I think this game can kickstart us to an undefeated season, so that’s the goal, “ Thormodsgaard said.
