Costa played their last Bay League match on Oct. 11, falling to Peninsula 201-215 at Rolling Hills Country Club.
“I think it’s good that we played this course because it makes our team stronger knowing that we can play courses as hard as this and we are prepared more than ever going into CIF,” junior Shani Waite said.
Waite ended the game with the team’s best score, shooting a 40. According to Waite, the match at Rolling Hills was very tough, but she was still able to pull through with a high score.
“I played with her all season and her finally getting the result she wanted was really fun to watch,” senior Klara Nagy said.
Nagy was another key player in the match, shooting a score of 43 with the lowest handicap. She impressesd others with her ability to successfully navigate around the golf course and maintain a low score, junior Isabelle Walker said.
“[Nagy’s] approach shots to the challenging greens were superb and her attitude was extremely positive,” Walker said.
Juniors Gabi Kiger, Juliae Shoda and Walker and senior Angelica Bigler, also contributed to the Costa team. Kiger ended with 41, Walker with 45, and Bigler and Shoda both received a score of 46.
“I enjoy playing golf with my teammates and we keep each others spirits up whether we do good or bad,” Waite said. “We are all motivated, and I believe we will do great things the rest of this season.”
Despite the defeat, Costa was still able to take home the Bay League championship title for the eighth season in a row, defeating the Panthers earlier that week 187-195 at Chester Washington Golf Course.
“It was our best team score of the season and we needed it to win Bay League,” Nagy said.
The Mustangs, now 9-4 overall and 5-1 in Bay League, competed in league finals on Wednesday at Harding, where Nagy, Waite, and Kiger advanced to California Interscholastic Federation.
“Our goal next season is to win Bay League again and to make it to the State Championship,” Waite said.
