The newest Marvel film, “Venom”, released on Oct.5, presents a unique take on what it truly means to be a superhero and a villain, and entertains all types of audiences.
“Venom” presents an intriguing story and entertains viewers with enthralling action scenes and a strong script. The film’s plot develops slowly but redeems itself through intense action sequences later in the film.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer and released on Oct. 5, “Venom” brings the Marvel comic book character to the big screen, and is a sub-plot of the Spider-Man stories. This is the first time the character has been brought to film in any Marvel production.
Set in San Francisco, Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist. Eddie is attempting to expose Carlton Drake, played by Riz Ahmed. Drake is a scientist who has created a symbiote that can thrive while inside a living host. He has begun to test these symbiotes on humans, which poses an ethical threat to his experiment. One of Drake’s scientists, Dora Skirth, played by Jenny Slate, disagrees with his ethics and recruits Eddie to help her unveil Drake’s true intentions.
The film provides constant entertainment for movie-goers, and does not disappoint fans of the Marvel franchise, due to the well-developed characters and accurate portrayal of the comic book characters. The intriguing plot and action-packed scenes keep the audience interested and engaged in the story.
While the overall atmosphere of the film was similar to most Marvel films, it was able to capture an interesting take on what a villain can be. The mix of acting, writing, and directing elements made for purposeful storytelling.
Strong performances from Hardy and Slate made the plot and intentions of each character clear. Additionally, Michelle Williams strongly portrays a well-defined character and displays good chemistry with the other actors in the film.
Another positive aspect of the film was its script. Although it was typically formulated, and followed the same format as most Marvel movies, the screen writers created a script with refreshing positivity and subtle theme and messages. It also included some jokes that were well-placed and delivered.
The directing of the film was intelligent and provided the audience with an exciting and consistent atmosphere. San Francisco proved to be fitting for the plot and added to its overall atmosphere. With purposeful and well-placed comic relief, the film is a enjoyable experience for viewers.
“Venom” produces a solid story and amuses its audience. With strong performances and astute directing, the film impresses the audience and is a positive experience for viewers, as it is a fun and gripping adventure for the audience to be apart of and see on the big screen.
“Venom” is rated PG-13 and is available in theatres nationwide on Oct. 5.
