Former Costa English and Drama teacher Carol Mathews accepted a reassignment position due to personal reasons and teacher Justin Ross took over her classes.
Mathews taught tenth and eleventh grade English for the first four weeks of school, but was continuously absent, according to junior Aidan Oliver. Former Costa Principal and English teacher John Giovati served as a long-term substitute for the class starting Sept. 26 through yesterday. Giovati worked to help students keep up with the curriculum, despite their lack of a permanent teacher.
“It has been weird considering we have gone almost two months without any real guidance of what we’re supposed to be learning and doing this year,” Oliver said. “It’ll be a nice change to have a new teacher which I am really happy about.”
Ross began teaching yesterday and previously taught high school English for 13 years in Albany, California. Ross’s skills and experience will make a good addition to the English department, Principal Dr. Ben Dale said in an email to Costa staff.
“I’m very excited to be here and I feel fortunate that I found such a good school to be at,” Ross said. “I love teaching, so I am really looking forward to teaching at a new school and challenging students.”
Ross grew up in Culver City, before living in the San Francisco Bay Area for 20 years. He moved back to Southern California to be closer to his family, a choice he has been considering for years, he said.
“I am looking forward to having a more stable learning environment with Mr. Ross,” Coordt said. “Most days in class we have a free period and it felt like a lot of days were wasted, so it will nice to start learning the curriculum.”
