The Mira Costa Mustangs put a spear in the Centennial Apaches side with a 49-0 win.

The Mustangs beat the Apaches 49-0 on October 19th at Centennial High School. The Mustangs’ dynamic offense  lead to the overwhelming win, senior running back Koda Thormodsgaard said.

“We really just did everything well on offense and it payed off, “ Thormodsgaard said.

Despite Centennial intercepting senior quarterback Nick Carpino’ on the opening drive, the Mustang offense quickly bounced back.. Carpino’s play action pass to senior Matt Harry in tight coverage gave the Mustangs their first touchdown, making the score 7-0. The Mustang defense also managed to hold a physical Centennial offense scoreless, and two more rushing touchdowns by Thormodsgaard left the Mustangs 21-0 at the half.

“I had great blocking tonight and it was a great feeling to get those touchdowns in the first half, “ Thormodsgaard said.

As the second half started, the Mustangs scoring continued as the Mustang defense took the spotlight. Senior linebacker Slade Gordon intercepted a Centennial pass and dashed into the endzone for another touchdown. Next, senior tight end Eddie Burga-Donovan scored giving 35-0 lead. Sophomore running back Ryan Moreno ran in for another Costa touchdown on a blank yard run . Afterwards, sophomore center J.B. Revell scored, and, up 49-0, the Mustangs put senior Franklin Spencer in for his first time this season. On his first play, Spencer ran in for a touchdown. Unfortunately, the touchdown was reversed due to multiple holding penalties and a angry Centennial side making the contest. However, the game was still a complete shut out, as the Mustangs crushed the Apaches, 49-0.

“Ball security is job security and it just felt good to score,” Spencer said.

The Mustangs, now 5-4 overall and 3-1 in Bay League, will face Redondo Union High School at Redondo at 7 next Friday in their final Bay League game of the season. The pressure is on for the Mustangs, as not only is this the big rivalry game, but also will determine whether or not the Mustangs make the playoffs, Thormodsgaard said.

“Next week against Redondo we just really want to come out fighting in the first half and finish our regular season strong as well as push for the playoffs,” Thormodsgaard said.
