Girls tennis plays Point Loma

The girl’s tennis team played at the Point Loma Tennis Invitational on the 28th and 29th at the Barnes Center in San Diego and placed 7th.

“We placed 7th and I think overall it was a fun tournament and a good learning experience for all of us,” said freshman Haily Huynh.

In the first round on the 28th, the Mustangs defeated the Matadors 2-4.  In singles, freshman Haily Huynh won 6-0 and 6-3. In doubles, junior team Audrey Vo and Olga Nagy won 6-0 and 6-0. Sophomore Kacey Feng and freshman Sydney Vo won two sets, scoring 6-4 and 6-0, and sophomore Hannah Bergin with junior Amanda Scott won 6-4 and 6-4.

“San Diego’s competition were one of the best teams we have played. we went up against the number two school in SoCal and it really showed how good we are and how good the other teams were,” Huynh said.

On the 28th, in the next round, the Mustangs lost to the Trojans 1-5.  In doubles, senior Lindsay Giese and sophomore Kacey Feng won all of their sets of doubles, scoring 5-7, 6-3 and 10-7.

“It was a tough weekend with long, deciding matches playing the highest ranked team,” freshman Nicole Wuelfing said.

On the 29th, the Costa team faced Peninsula and finished the game 3-3, with Peninsula winning in the tiebreaker.  In singles, freshman Kiki Daviduk won 6-4 and 6-1. In doubles, junior team Audrey Vo and Olga Nagy won 6-1 and 6-3, and sophomore Kacey Feng and freshman Sydney Vo won 6-1 and 6-2.

“We didn’t do as well as we would have hoped but it was really good competition both days,” senior Kendall Lebins said.

Costa competed against the Dana Hills High School for seventh place, where the Mustangs defeated the Dolphins 4-2.  In singles, freshman Nicole Weulfing won 6-1 and 6-0, and freshman Kiki Daviduk won 6-1 and 7-5.  In doubles, senior team Lindsay Giese and Kendall Lebbins won 6-3 and 6-1, and junior Kacey Feng with sophomore Sydney Vo won 6-2 and 6-4.

“We placed 7th in the san diego tournament which i think is pretty good since there were a lot of really good competitive teams there,” sophomore Kacey Feng said.

The overall Mira Costa record is 10-5, and 1-1 in the Bay League. Their next match is an away game on Oct 3 against Corona Del Mar.

“We are excited to play this match because Corona Del Mar is a really amazing team and I think we have to go out there and play our hardest and best tennis,” said senior Kendall Lebins.
