The emotional film “The Hate U Give” perfectly discusses serious issues in the world through outstanding acting and an intense plot.

“The Hate U Give” is a fascinating story about an African American girl named Starr who tries to fit in at her while-privileged high school and her low-income, black neighborhood without the two worlds colliding. Every aspect was meticulously thought out, creating a marvelously produced film.

The film captures a whole range of concerns and events centered around the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as broader American conversations about race. Focusing on the police shooting of an unarmed black man, Starr struggles to stick up for what she believes in. The film was directed by George Tillman Jr. and written by Audrey Wells. Amandla Stenberg stars as Starr Carter, KJ Apa stars as Chris, Starr’s boyfriend, and Sabrina Carpenter stars as Hailey, Starr’s best friend.

“The Hate U Give” impeccably demonstrates police shootings of young, unarmed black men, “colorblind” white people, an asymmetrical justice system, and gang violence. Each of these issues is extremely relevant in today’s society, illustrating what it’s like to live during this time.

Rooted deeply in the black community, Tillman portrays black rage as a force to be reckoned with. He effectively depicts how African Americans’ culture is not to be overlooked, but to be seen as part of their identity and who they are.

The most powerful theme throughout the film is the effect of hate on the young. The film traces cycles of violence back to America’s racist roots. Throughout the film, they quote “the hate you give little infants f***s everyone” which shows how the hate people instill into their children is passed down generation after generation.

The thrilling sound effects and outstanding music choices help the film establish its meanings. The songs that are chosen have meanings that are properly related to the film, like discrimination and white supremacy. The anticipating sound effects also help keep the viewer on the edge of their seat.

Not only does the film deal with serious issues, it also shows a stable, loving family. Starr’s parents want what’s best for her and will do whatever it takes to help her succeed. Tillman wonderfully executed how a loving supportive family should be, which allowed Starr to have an admirable example of what her family should be.

“The Hate U Give” is an emotional film that deserves to be seen world wide. It deals with important issues of racism and injustices, with vivid characters and a brilliant storyline. Tillman remarkably incorporates significant subject matter without straying too far from the plot.

“The Hate U Give,” released on Oct. 5th, is rated PG-13 and is playing in theaters nationwide.
