The Manhattan Beach department of Parks and Recreation hosted the 29th annual Manhattan Beach Pier lighting on Wednesday to kick off the holiday season.

Choirs from Manhattan Beach Middle School and Mira Costa performed Christmas carols, such as “Caroling, Caroling” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.” Mayor Steve Napolitano switched on the pier holiday lights, beginning the community’s celebration of the holiday season, Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Hersman said.

“Kids and adults love the pier lighting event every year because it is the kickoff to the holiday season,” Hersman said. “There’s santa, reindeer, music and it’s all fun.”

Businesses in downtown Manhattan Beach, including shops in the Metlox Plaza, held open houses to give the community a more intimate experience of their services and merchandise. Restaurants gave out free samples and boutiques put their products on display for the public to see.

“People say Manhattan Beach has become too big or too affluent and we’ve moved away from our small town roots,” Hersman said. “This event is a great way to showcase our downtown and continue to enjoy the small town of Manhattan Beach.”
