For all of my four years at Costa, I have been living a double life. It seems dramatic, because I haven’t been living as an alter ego for a superhero or donned a blonde wig to be an international pop star and keeping it a secret from my friends. Instead, my double life is being a part of both La Vista and Model UN.
Ever since freshman year when I decided I wanted to do both programs, I have been given the classic comments: “How do you do that?” “Why would you do that to yourself?” or my least favorite: “Which one do you like better?”
When I was in eighth grade, I knew that I wanted to be in La Vista and that I wanted to try the Introduction to Model UN class. I never really expected to become so invested in both, and I especially didn’t expect to have reached positions that I love in both programs.
It has been hard to juggle both extracurriculars, and there is no doubt that people have assumed I only took on both to bolster my résumé. But I can honestly say that my passions are strong and real for both organizations, even though they both have their individual flaws. Choosing my favorite of the two would be like picking my favorite best friend.
Both La Vista and Model UN have given me lifelong friendships, taught me invaluable lessons and overall improved my high school experience. Above all else, both La Vista and Model UN have taught me how to be a good leader, how to work well with others, and other skills that I will be able to utilize in college and my future career.
Being in both programs has also benefited me: I have been able to give information for stories about MUN conferences, and my ability to write and research quickly from La Vista has helped me write countless position papers in MUN. In all my four years, I have never once completely regretted doing both programs, and I could never imagine my life just doing one. Participating in both La Vista and MUN have equally contributed to a memorable high school experience that I will look back on fondly.
