Mira Costa boys basketball beat Leuzinger 59-55 on Tuesday, January 8,2019 at MBMS with a top performance from Lucas Hobbs.
Mira Costa started off the first quarter strong by winning the tip off and attacking on offense . They managed to keep the ball moving and have control of the game for the majority of the quarter. This quarter was led by by senior Lucas Hobbs who shot multiple threes and had a steal on defense. Ending the quarter with a score of 17-13 Mira Costa. According to Hobbs the team was well prepared for this game.
“ We knew exactly what Leuzinger wanted to do on offense and prepared accordingly. Our game plan worked well right from the beginning and we were able to attack on offense and take an early lead.” Said Hobbs.
The Mustangs kept up this momentum and fought hard throughout the second quarter. Mustangs played neck and neck with Leuzinger this quarter with baskets going back and forth. Despite Costa’s efforts Leuzinger shot a buzzer beater three to take the lead, ending this quarter with the score of 28-29 Leuzinger . According to senior Parker Lynch the team worked hard this quarter but their offense broke down a little.
“ Our offense was not as strong as it was the first quarter but this allowed us to step up defensively which helped us later in the game.” Lynch said.
Mira Costa came out strong and energized after half time and completely controlled this quarter. Their offense was once again dominate and Leuzinger was unable to keep up. The team was carried by Lucas Hobbs who scored 10 points in this quarter, accompanied by shots from senior Henry Householter, ending this quarter 44 – 41 Mira Costa. According to junior JD Sanchez the team came together and played their best.
“Our defense really carried us this quarter and our offense started to come together again, it was one of the best quarters we’ve had all season.” Said Sanchez.
Both teams played hard during the fourth quarter creating an intense environment. Shots went back and fourth between the two teams but Costa ultimately held the upper hand by maintaining a dominant passing game on offense. Baskets by junior Max McCalla and junior Matt Hammick led to the final score of 59-55 Mira Costa with the win.
“We held off their run in the 4th and everyone on the floor made clutch plays. It was a great league win for us.” Said Max McCalla.
Mira Costa will next face off Centennial on January 11, 2019 at Centennial high school at 7:30.
“ We played very well this game and if we keep the same energy and team dynamic we should take home the win again on Friday.” Said Lucas Hobbs.
