Costa went up against the Sunny Hills Lancers on February 23rd at Warren High School. The Mustangs struggled to find their footing in the first half, as the Lancers drove past the Mustangs offense in the opening two minutes of the match. Despite Costa’s defensive efforts, Sunny Hills also managed to score in the final two minutes of the half, leaving the Mustangs down, 2-0.
Costa came back strong, however, as junior Sydney Miyasaki managed to open the half with a goal for the Mustangs. However, despite a half full of a dynamic offense for the Mustangs, a lack of a penalty call in the final minutes left the Mustangs unable to make a comeback, losing 2-1.
“It was so incredibly frustrating not to get the call at the end of the second half, especially because we needed it at that moment, “ senior Olivia Tuffli said. “It was really disappointing that so many calls did not go our way, but that’s the game sometimes.”
The Mustangs, now 4-1 in the postseason, close out their season with an impressive record. Despite the loss in the finals, Costa placed first in Bay League and became the first Costa Girls Soccer team to make the finals since 2000.
“The loss was disappointing, but everyone on the team knows what a huge honor it was to have made this season what it has been and to know that all of our hard work has paid off, “ Tuffli said.
