Reports received by staff members stated that there was a recontamination of asbestos in the Mira Costa Library in mid-February.
The asbestos was reportedly found once again in the Costa library in the week leading up to ski week. This information was released by Manhattan Beach Unified Teachers Association President and English teacher, Shawn Chen, in a staff meeting Monday Feb. 25.
“We have found asbestos in the junk room in the back of the library. We’re going to clean it all out before we reopen,” Mira Costa principal, Dr. Dale said.
MBUSD posted reports to their website up until November, but not posted the reports for the December and February contaminations. Chen submitted a public records request to the AQMD agency for the recontamination records. Chen also asked for ENCORP testing reports from deputy superintendent, Dawnalyn Murakawa Leopard.
“The district really should release the reports because we as students have a right to know what is going on with the facilities on campus because the situation affects us a lot,” Sophomore Holly Misley said.
As reports are released by the district updates from La Vista will be given.
