Mira Costa boys lacrosse beat Village Christian 15-7 on March 12 with a top performance senior Josh Maruyama who scored four goals.

Costa started out the first period by quickly putting points on the board. They dominated the game and were able to keep the ball in constant movement on offense. Goals by junior Cole Garvey and senior Max Geoghan allowed Costa to finish the first period with a score of 4-2, with Costa in the lead.

“We underestimated the team and they came out and scored first,” Geoghan said. We bounced back and ended up being ahead multiple goals by the end of the first.”

By the second period the Mustang’s offense had control. Their defense was also in control, and gave Village Christian little opportunities to score. Multiple goals by Maruyama and junior Emmet Reed allowed Costa to extend their lead, ending the quarter 8-4 Mira Costa.

“Our offense did a good job of taking advantage of the other teams weak points on defense and our defense was able to control their offensive threats,” Maruyama said.

Mira Costa’s offense continued to excel in the third period. Once again the Mustangs had constant possession of the ball and were always finding opportunities to score. Their powerful offensive game allowed them to end the quarter with a 13-5 lead.

“We held the ball and started to play as a team. The second string guys got in and got it done on offense as well,” junior Lucas Menendez said.

By the fourth period Costa’s offense weakened but they were still able to put points on the board. The Mustangs had an overall strong offensive game and was able to end with a 15-7 win.

“The fourth period was not our best but we still managed to score some good goals.” Menendez said.

The Mustangs are currently 0-1 in Bay League and 4-2 overall. They will next face off against Brentwood on March 18.

“Our offense really came together this game and if we focus more as a team I think we are going to easily beat Brentwood on Friday,” Menendez said.
