Boys volleyball practiced hard throughout the preseason and had its first match on March 1 against Santa Barbara. The Mustangs won in four sets, 25-22, 24-26, 25-18 and 25-13. Costa passed well and was able to run their middles efficiently, this freed up their pin hitters to get good shots on balls, junior Dain Johnson said.

“Santa Barbara was a good team, but we just outplayed them,” Johnson said. “But, if we want to improve and beat teams like Redondo, we’re going to need to serve a bit tougher.”

Costa played in their first Bay League game yesterday against Palos Verdes at home. The results were unavailable  at the time of publication. The Mustangs have won five National Championships, and seven California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division 1 Championships. This year they are looking to add a CIF title, senior Thomas Kretschmer said.

“We know that we are going to have stronger competition and we’re focusing on being able to handle that so that we can have the best possible chance to win,” Kretschmer said.
