Track and field’s season started out strong with their first meet on Feb. 16 in the season opener, where Costa competed against West Torrance and South Torrance at West Torrance. The Mustangs placed first in many events, including the boys and girls 1200 meters, boys shot put, boys pole vault and boys and girls long jump.

Costa track had a successful season last year, led by then senior Xavier Court and current senior Brigitte Grau, who both made it to the State Meet. At the State Meet, Court raced in the 3200 meter and improved his school record, running a 8:59.56 and placing third, while Grau advanced to the Pole Vault Finals. The Mustangs also competed in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Finals and had four athletes qualify for the CIF Masters.

“We have some very promising athletes on the team this year so we’re excited for the rest of season,” Grau said. “We are continuing to train hard and push ourselves to that next level for the remainder of season.”

This week, the Mustangs competed against Torrance High School at Zamperini Field, where Costa came in first place. Costa next competes on Saturday at Costa in the Mustang Relays.

“The team needs to improve on having faith in ourselves and trusting that we can stick with the front pack for the whole race,” freshman Dalia Frias said.
