Mira Costa Varsity Softball pulled out a win against Palos Verdes with a score of 3-2 in a very close game at home on Mar. 20.
Both teams were scoreless in the first inning. A double by first baseman Jenna Ortega got the Mustangs started in the second and a single by catcher Mariana Ledezma scored Ortega. Pitcher Katie Katsuyama kept the Sea Kings scoreless until the sixth inning where they scored two runs. In the bottom of the sixth, Ortega hit a solo homerun to get the Mustangs tied at two a piece. Katsuyama shut the Sea Kings out in the seventh and hits by outfielder Piper Neri and second baseman Ella Lee got them going. A pop fly by shortstop Amanda Siegel, that was missed by the outfielder brought in the winning run.
“Our win today came from our energy throughout the whole game,” Ortega said. “We never gave up and we kept fighting all the way to the end. I think today, we had each other’s backs and that’s what made us play way better than we have before.”
This win brings the Mustang’s record to 7-9 and are playing Peninsula High School on Mar. 22 at Peninsula.
“I’m looking forward for us to keep hitting the ball the way we’ve been hitting and for us to just have fun and get a win [against Peninsula],” Ortega said.
