After rain postponed Friday’s game, Mira Costa boys baseball faced La Mirada high school on Saturday May 12th for their quarterfinal game. Mira Costa lost 9-2, ending their season.
“ We had a terrific overall season and played our hearts out, I’m sad it has to come to an end but happy about our journey, this game was a tough loss but we knew going in that La Mirada was a good team and we were the underdogs.” Said sophomore Jonah Storey.
La Mirada came out strong with a lead off double and an RBI allowing them to take a 1-0 lead. At the bottom of the second inning they had bases loaded and hit a single but, only gained one run due to a perfect throw by sophomore left fielder, Jonah Storey. Ending the second inning with a score of 2-0, La Mirada in the lead.
“Mirada came out strong with a few good hits but I think our defense still played well and ended their run.” Storey said.
In the third inning senior Chase Meidroth hit a single followed by a walk from senior Nick Carpino. After two outs, first baseman Dylan Dennis hit a single to bring in Meidroth and put Costa on the board. La Mirada then hit a three-run home run to add to their lead, making it 6-1 at the end of the third inning.
“ We had a pretty good hitting game all around but were unable to get many runs.” Said junior Tyler Antrobious
In the fourth inning La Mirada hit a two-run home run, making for an 8-1 lead. Costa was able to get many players on base but unable to capitalize and score any runs for the following two innings. In the top of the sixth inning La Mirada hit another home run leading to a score of 9-1 La Mirada in the lead.
“ We played hard but Mirada was a very strong team. Overall I think we had a great season.” Said Antrobious.
The Mustangs scored their second run in the seventh inning off an RBI single hit by senior James Park but could not add on any more runs before the final out, ending the game with a 9-2 score, La Mirada with the win
“ James had a good hit that allowed us to gain another run but La Mirada had a good defense and stopped our threat ” Storey said, “ In the end we had a great season and beat many good teams.”
This game finished off the Mustangs 2019 season, they ended with an overall record of 23-9 and 9-1 in Bay League.
“ Going into the season we had a good idea of what it’d be like, we started off with 1-3 and injury plagued our roster, for us to overcome all the negative factors and come together as a team was all anyone could ask for” junior Kyle Karros said “ we put together one hell of a season and beat so many top ranked teams, being the underdogs ain’t so bad, and Bay League champs for the 3rd year in a row always feels nice.”
