The Mira Costa Mustangs squeezed out a huge victory against the Palos Verdes Sea Kings on Jan. 25. In the final two minutes of play, the visiting Mustangs scored a goal to finish the game 1-0.
The Mustangs and the Sea Kings battled all game; both teams vying for the Bay League title. In the league, the Sea Kings were leading by 3 points, which is one win. They were looking to take a big 6 point lead with this game, but the Mustangs did not allow it.
The Sea Kings constantly attacked the Mustang defense but the Mustangs did not relent. Their strong defense really was an important factor in this game. According to Mira Costa’s coach, their improved goal keeper kept them in the game. Junior Gavin Jerrigan had 11 saves in goal.
With about a minute and a half left in the game, senior Charlie Pitts threw the ball deep into the box. Senior Shane Sisson seized the opportunity and scored the Mustangs lone but vital goal.
The Mustangs improved their record to 10-2-3 overall and 3-1-1 in Bay League. Currently tied with the Sea Kings for first place, they look to win the league and improve their Bay League standing when they host West Torrance on Jan. 28.
