The Mustang’s surf team lost to Huntington Beach High School in a close co-ed contest, losing 75-72 on May 3 in an away contest held just south of the Huntington Beach Pier.

“It came down to the wire at the end there, but unfortunately we were not able to come out with a win,” senior Zach Rosenberg said.

Costa had a rough start, as the first heat began 15 minutes early, causing three of Costa’s surfers to miss the first five minutes. However, Costa was still able to place well, with sophomore Joey Samuelian finishing third, senior Nick Cerofeci fourth, and sophomore Lucas Horta fifth. Heat two was also a struggle, with Costa finishing third, fourth and fifth. This left Costa down 25-17.

“Considering that the kids in our first heat didn’t know the heat was on for the first five minutes, coupled with the fact that many of the local surfers didn’t clear the line-up for the contest, I’d say the kids in the first heat did pretty well,” coach Tracy Geller said.

The Mustangs started to come back in heat three, with junior Megan Seth placing second, senior Kyra Williams finishing third and junior Ashley Weaver placing fifth. Costa continued its momentum in heat four with junior Coco Vergnolle placing first, but was still down at the half, trailing Huntington Beach 45-39.

“We did well to claw our way back into the contest, and it looked promising going into heat five,” senior Alex Fry said.

In the fifth heat, seniors Carly Komick, Kenna Hawkes and Emily Eddins finished first, third and fifth, narrowing the gap to three points. In the sixth heat Costa tied the score, but lost 12-9 in the final heat.

“We almost had it, but ultimately we weren’t able to beat them even though we came close,” Rosenberg said.

Costa surf went undefeated in Bay League and some of Costa’s surfers competed in the SBSSA All Stars Surf Contest at 26th street the past few weeks.

“It was an awesome effort that, if not for the rocky start and some lame shenanigans by the Huntington Beach locals, could have easily gone the other way,” Geller said.
