There have been 10 confirmed cases of Mira Costa students diagnosed with Pertussis as of May 1, Principal Dr. Ben Dale said in an email to Costa parents and students.

Pertussis, more commonly known as whooping cough, is a contagious disease that often starts with common cold symptoms. Diagnosed students took antibiotics for five days before returning to class.

“If kids are diagnosed with whooping cough they should stay home until it’s no longer contagious, so that it doesn’t spread and affect the learning environment,” sophomore Braeden Vandemore said.
