Costa staff members and organizations held the first annual First Day Assembly Series yesterday in the Mustang Mall, Waller Stadium, auditorium, small theater and cafeteria.
With their respective grade levels, students attended four distinct assemblies: How to Be A Mustang, Mustang Spirit, Inclusion and Healthy Relationships/Consent. According to Principal Dr. Ben Dale, he divided the school into groups by grade level in order to ensure that the assemblies were as efficient and effective as possible.
“I thought the assemblies being separated by grade was better than all grades combined,” senior Kelly Shea said. “It would have been really chaotic and it was better for us to get to know each other on a deeper level. Even though some of us are in our senior year it helps to unify us and make sure we have a deeper understanding of consent, sexuality, how to be a mustang and all the other topics discussed.”
Dale decided to hold the Assembly Series after various students, staff members and parents reached out to him about issues that Costa needed to be informed about, he said. The day gave students the opportunity to learn about school rules and important life lessons, as well as meet their teachers, learn their schedules and get acquainted, Dale said.`
“We decided just to put it all into one big pot,” Dale said. “It turned into a ramp-up day, [and] if it was successful I hope it’s something we continue to do for a lot of years to come.”
