Mira Costa Girls Tennis proved the ball was in their court this weekend, taking first place in the Golden State Tennis Classic.
Costa traveled to Stanford University for the annual Golden State Classic. The team played four rounds over the course of two days, on September 6th and 7th. Mira Costa competed against four schools, including Monte Vista, Palo Alto, Menlo Atherton, and St. Francis, taking first overall.
In the first round of matches, Mira Costa beat Monte Vista of Danville, California, 6 to 0.
The Mustangs competed in three sets of singles, winning all of the matches to qualify for the next round. Costa also dominated in doubles, starting the tournament off strong with a shutout. In the quarterfinals, the Mustangs matched up against Palo Alto 5-1. Costa competed in two sets of singles matches and three sets of doubles, winning across the board to advance to the semi-finals.
“I think as a group we all felt closer to one another after spending the weekend together and it has caused all of us to get to know one another much better, “ said senior Kiki Daviduk. Because of that, as a group, we will hopefully perform better during the season and strengthen our team bond,” said Daviduk.
In the semi finals, Costa took on Menlo Atherton High School, winning with a final score of 4-2. The Mustangs lost in singles, but dominated in doubles, propelling them to the finals.
In the finals, Mira Costa defeated St. Francis of Mountain View, winning 8-6 in sets. Despite losing in singles again, the Mustangs also swept in doubles. Going undefeated in all twelve doubles matches throughout the tournament made the difference, and clinched the overall win for the Mustangs.
“With every team there are problems and conflicts but overall we played well and our place in the competition shows that, “ said Daviduk.
The Mustangs, now 4-0, will go up against Harvard-Westlake at Weddington G&T on September 10th. The Mustangs hope to come out victorious against teams that have been strong competition in the past, Daviduk said.
“Hopefully to beat these schools who have historically been better than us and to play our hardest no matter what, ” said Daviduk.
