Journalists are like superheroes; we comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. This quote was the foundation of our first lesson in my beginning journalism class taught by Michael McAvin. We were taught that the duty of a journalist is to speak the truth in the face of controversy, and to challenge ideas of those in power, while comforting those who have been taken advantage of by others.
Our curriculum ranged from studying Ed Code 48907, to learning about the Water- gate Scandal, and every lesson proved invaluable, because McAvin gave us ground- work to becoming journalists.
McAvin has returned as the advisor of La Vista, and we as a staff are happy to welcome him back to the La Vista family for our 70th volume. McAvin was the advisor of La Vista for 15 years, and with his experience and knowledge, we hope to learn the ins and outs of creating the best newspaper possible.
La Vista has been presented with many changes over the course of the past few years, ranging from multiple advisor changes to brand new scheduling changes. In the face of all of these changes, the one thing that has remained consistent is our goal to provide our readers with the best source of news possible.
