3…2…1…BLAST OFF! There goes Brad Pitt, shooting off into space in his newest scientific thriller, “Ad Astra.”
This film is not what one would expect for a typical sci-fi space thriller. “Ad Astra” is packed with action, suspense, and stunning graphics, however, beneath the surface, there is a deeper story about the relationship between fathers and sons.
“Ad Astra” is directed by James Gray and stars celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Liv Tyler, and more. The film features an extensive visual effects team with Kevin Thompson playing a key role in the production of the masterpiece.
The film follows the journey of Roy McBride, played by Brad Pitt, as he embarks on a journey to rescue his father from his mission to Neptune. Roy has a complex relationship with his father who has neglected him throughout his entire childhood. With many challenges along the way, Roy is propelled by love through space in an attempt to bring his father home.
One of the most apparent and well done features of the film is the visual effects. Since the majority of the film takes place in space, most of the scenes are shot in front of a green screen. There was also a lot of computer generated image, but the visual effects department mastered their editing and produced a realistic and stunning depiction of life in outer space.
Along with the breathtaking visual effects, the costume design was flawless. Costume designer Albert Wolsky compiled an amazing team of designers who produced realistic astronaut suits. They paid attention to every small detail, mastering the art of costume design.
Although not vital to the film, “Ad Astra” lacked a quality soundtrack. At times, an odd track can be heard playing in the background. A majority of the music choices were random and out of place. However, the incorporation of appropriate cosmic sounds makes up for the lack of music in the film.
Roy McBride’s mission seems simple: fly through space, go to Neptune, save his father, and go home. But the story is so much deeper than that. “Ad Astra” is an emotional rollercoaster for viewers, depicting the struggles and challenges that a father and son face within their relationship. Although a little more complex than most relationships, viewers can still relate to the struggle.
Despite the fact that “Ad Astra” is a sci-fi thriller, it creates a very realistic depiction of what life on Earth (and the Moon and Mars) may be like years from now. This aspect of the film is vital, making it flow smoothly and easy for viewers to keep up with the storyline.
Released on Sept. 20, “Ad Astra” is available for viewing in theaters nationwide.
