The Mustangs were unable to score a hole in one against the West Torrance Warriors on Oct. 8. Girls Varsity loses for the first time in their league matches to West Torrance High School. West Torrance’s score of 206 beat Mira Costa by only 4 strokes. They played at West Torrance’s home course, Alondra Golf Course in Lawndale which is a regulation course.

“This was a very important match in determining how far we will make it in to CIF and every match will be critical after this one.” said Coach Tom Cox.

Consistent lowest scoring player, Gabi Kiger, led the team once again scoring a 40 on the par 36 course. Right behind her was senior Shani Waite with a 41, junior Juliae Shoda with a 42, sophomore Hannah Gedion with a 43, and junior Kate Stargardter with a 44.

“Coach Cox has us map out the course as a team during practice so that we are more prepared and that helps us when playing on unfamiliar courses,” said Lucy Langlois.

The Mustangs, now 6-6, will play at Chester Washington Golf Course on Oct. 10. Even though Mustangs lacked experience on the course the difference in the score was only by 4 strokes. Costa hopes to have a shot at redemption with a home course advantage.

“The matches prior to the league along with some tournaments we play in are to prepare the players to succeed in the league,” said Coach Cox.

*In a previous version of this article, it stated that Alondra Golf Course in Lawndale was a par 3 course, but was corrected to a regulation course. The article also stated that Costa’s home course was The Lakes, but was corrected to Chester Washington Golf Course.
