Mira Costa added another Bay League win to their record on Friday, defeating the Leuzinger Olympians, 42-14.
The Mustangs went up against the Olympians at Leuzinger High School on Oct. 18. Costa’s powerhouse defense and aggressive run game allowed the Mustangs to come out on top and earn their second consecutive win.
In the first half, Costa started off strong, when junior Bryce Carlisle topped off a series of dynamic runs with a rushing touchdown,putting the first points on the board. Luezinger responded, scoring another touchdown but missing the extra point, making the score 7-6. However, as Costa entered the second quarter, the Mustangs took back control of the game. Junior Charlie Kohler blocked a Leuzinger punt, which allowed junior Zane Thormodsgaard to pick up the ball and dash into the endzone for a Costa touchdown. Junior Jaden McDonald then scored another Mustang touchdown off of a pick six, giving Costa a 21-6 lead. To close out the half, junior quarterback Sam Whitney made a 10-yard pass to senior wide receiver Kian Towfighi, making the score 28-6 going into the locker room.
The Mustang offense struggled to find their rhythm going into the third quarter, as many key offensive starters were out due to injury. The third quarter was scoreless for both sides, and Leuzinger was able to make a touchdown a the start of the fourth quarter, making the score 28-14. Fortunately, Costa quickly found its momentum, and Whitney made a 15-yard pass to Thomas Southey for a touchdown. To end the quarter, Carlisle scored again, executing a 3-yard rush for the Mustangs, making the final score 42-14.
Costa, now 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Bay League, will face Centennial High School at Waller Stadium on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in the homecoming matchup. The Mustangs hope to secure another Bay League win on the road to the playoffs.
