Costa teachers and students informed during third period today that students are to stay indoors during lunch for the day due to the current air quality.
According to the Air Quality Management District, the air quality index in Manhattan Beach is currently at 143 with fine particulate matter, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. The administration is asking that teachers keep windows and doors closed and cancelled outdoor school sports and activities.
“It’s hard to stay focused in classes especially when you feel light-headed and sick from the bad air quality,” junior Rachel Abbe said. “But having to stay indoors also takes away from the fun of Halloween and seeing everyone’s costumes.”
Fourth period teachers released students for lunch, although the district is advising all students and staff to stay indoors as much as possible. The district advises students in sensitive health groups to eat indoors and are allowing parents of these students to pick up their children.
“I think the school is doing a good job of keeping the students and staff informed about the precautions they are taking,” junior Laine Weston said. “I think it’s good that they are looking out for the health of other students.”
