The Mustangs weren’t able to shoot the ball in the net and carry out a victory in Inglewood during their tournament over the holiday break.
Over the course of 3 days, the Mira Costa Girls Basketball Team competed in the St. Mary’s Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament. The tournament was held at St. Mary’s Academy in Inglewood, and took place from Jan. 2 through Jan. 4.
“We were able to play hard the whole tournament, but we just didn’t get the success we wanted because our shots didn’t fall,” senior forward Kim Waller said.
On the first day, Costa faced off against Dorsey High School and started of strong. The Mustangs kept their lead throughout the course of the game by playing strong offense and not letting the Dons catch up. They were able to keep their energy up and closed out the game with an overall score of 68-40.
“We did very well with passing the ball around and communicating throughout the game. We also were able to continue our energy on and off the court,” senior shooting guard, Amanda Barba said.
The Mustangs didn’t get much time to rest, as they played Viewpoint High School the next day. The Patriots immediately hit the ground running as they were able to break Costa’s defense and put up a strong fight against their offense. The Mustangs began to make a comeback, but they just fell short 47-72.
“We played really good defense in this game, and we fought hard as a team,” sophomore point guard Cara Susilo said. “We want to have a positive attitude and keep the mentality so that our upcoming season can be an overall success.”
In the final game of the tournament, the Mustangs went up against Crenshaw High School. Although it was a close game, the Mustangs unfortunately fell short to the Cougars with the score of 49-41.
“We played really tough tonight and hustled the whole game, the ball just wasn’t falling in our basket” senior shooting guard Skylar Herdman said. “We had a ton of shots and they weren’t falling.”
The Mustangs are now scheduled to play Peninsula High School on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at MBMS at 6:00.
“The tournament was very transformative for our team and highlighted our strengths and points to work on,” Barba said.
