The Costa orchestras performed holiday pieces at their winter con- cert on Dec. 6 in the auditorium at 7 p.m.
The performance began with the Philharmonic Orchestra playing “Shalom Chaverim,” an Israeli folk song arranged by Elliot Del Borgo; “Farandole from L’Arlésienne Suite No. 2,” by George Bizet and arranged by Merle J. Isac; and “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” a traditional piece arranged by Jack Bullock.
“This is an opportunity for students to work hard toward something that we are literally creating, which has a slightly different type of satisfaction with the performing arts,” Costa Orchestra director Peter Park said.
Sinfonietta played “Brook Green Suite,” by Gustav Holst, followed by Chamber Orchestra’s perfor mance of “Russian Scherzo in D Major,” by Alexander Borodin. The two groups then performed “Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly (A Merry Fugue),” arranged by Hershy Kay, together.
After intermission, Symphony Orchestra performed “Symphony No. 1 Jeremi- ah,” by Leonard Bernstein, and “Sleigh Ride,” by Leroy Anderson.
“The Winter Concert definitely marks our current progress as a full orchestra and has left an accurate representation of our current professionalism and confidence in our playing,” junior and violist Julia Vazquez said.
For its first piece, “Symphony No. 1 Jeremiah,” by Leonard Bernstein, Symphony Orchestra was joined by Kate Warren, a Costa junior and mezzosoprano vocalist, for its third movement, “Lamentations.”
“Singing with the orchestra was absolutely amazing, and every time we finished the song, I was left uncontrollably smiling,” Warren said. “During the performance I felt like this is where we all were supposed to be at that moment, sharing music with those who will listen.”
