Mira Costa boys basketball beat the Redondo Union Seahawks at Redondo on Tuesday.
The Mustangs faced the Redondo Seahawks at Redondo Union High School, finishing with a score of 52-48.
The Mustangs came out with a lot of intensity and a strong defense and finished the quarter with a score of 18-12.
“I think we played really well because we were prepared defensively and ready for their offense,” sophomore Jesse Waller said. “Offensively, I think we created shots for ourselves and passed the ball well.”
The Mustangs’ assists helped put pressure on the Seahawks. Senior point guard Max McCalla drove the ball to the basket, contributing eight points to the Mustangs’ first-half score, but the Seahawks led, 24-23.
“We battled as a team and played very hard,” freshman guard Dylan Black said. “The quest to keep our 4-0 league winning streak continues.”
The Mustangs went into the second half ready to fight for the win, Waller said. Senior Tyler Antrobius scored six points during the first half and improved his game during the third quarter.
“We have been working extremely hard at practice and putting extra time in watching film and getting shots up, and [our hardwork] has been paying off,” senior Teagan Disharoon said.
Senior guard Matt Cammock played strong, effective defense on the Seahawks, setting screens and getting rebounds. Junior guard Alex Cortez had multiple assists that contributed to the Mustangs’ success.
“We played great defense and offense this game,” McCalla said. “This was a really important game for us so we can prove ourselves to other teams, and we did that.”
By the end of the third quarter, Antrobius was in a good rhythm with his 10 points for the Mustangs. With just 54 seconds left in the third quarter, McCalla assisted junior guard Richard Kick, moving the score to 33-32, Costa. The quarter was not over yet, as Antrobius scored a buzzer beater, taking a four-point lead over the Seahawks.
“Coming into league, people didn’t really believe in us,” Disharoon said. “So we took that and are using it to fuel us to do everything we can to win the Bay League.”
Antrobius began the fourth quarter with a break away and scored a layup, which was his 15th point of the game. Later in the quarter, Kick beat the Sea Hawks’ defense to the hoop, scoring a layup, making the score 41-36 with five minutes remaining.
“We are going to continue working extremely hard to keep up our record and winning streak in league,” Waller said.
Costa then made a free throw, making the score 50-44 with 33 seconds remaining in the game. The game ended 52-48, improving Mira Costa’s overall record to 15-7 and a Bay League record of 5-0 this season. In the end, Antrobius was the leading scorer, with a total of 22 points for the Mustangs.
“Although we are doing extremely well, the quest isn’t over yet, so we are gonna stay focused and keep playing the best defense in Bay League,” Disharoon said.
