Costa junior Gabby Olivas won the annual Poetry Out Loud competition on Jan. 15 with her recitations of “Night Magic” by Lorna Dee Cervantes and “How to Triumph Like a Girl” by Ada Limón.
English teacher Diana Sieker first introduced the competition to Costa in 2011. Contestants selected and memorized poems from the Poetry Out Loud anthology. A panel of Costa’s English teachers judged on voice and articulation, dramatic and physical presence.
“The performance really comes from your interpretation of the poem and your ability to communicate it to the judges and the audience,” Olivas said.
