Mira Costa Girls Water polo pulls out a second victory in the CIF quarterfinals.

Mira Costa Girls Water Polo defeated Santa Barbara High School, 6-5 on Saturday, Feb.16 in the CIF quarterfinals. The top scorers of the game were seniors Celeste Almendariz and Dylan Read.

The Mustangs fought hard against the Don’s with back to back scoring. Mira Costa kept up a strong defense throughout the whole game, with senior goalie Erin O’Donnell having eight solid blocks in goal. The game went into overtime and the Mustangs were able to come out on top with a win, 6-5.

“We came into the strong and united,” senior Charlee Wickemeyer said. “We were mentally and physically prepared for this game and we came in strong.”

The Mustangs are scheduled to play in the CIF semifinals against Harvard Westlake at Woollett on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Mira Costa currently has an overall record of 22-7 and are 2-0 in playoffs.

“In overtime, we were able to hold Santa Barbara back which led to our win,” senior captain Leigh Lyter said. “Everybody was on their game and we played really well together.
