Elizabeth Terry, a junior at Mira Costa creates and shares art pieces on Instagram in her free time as a hobby and a fun way to share what she is passionate about.

Terry began drawing as soon as she was able to write to her name. Currently, Terry is taking AP Studio Art for 2D Design, and in the past has taken AP Studio Art for drawing. She was always surrounded by art and encouraged by her family to create her own pieces.

“My uncle has always drawn portraits of [my] family at dinner, or strangers wherever we were,” Terry said. “I would be in his lap watching him draw, and he encouraged me from a young age to make art.”

As she got older, Terry became better at drawing and kept pursuing this hobby. Her uncle always supported her and helped her pursue her interests. Terry’s uncle was always generous and supplied her with different materials and books about different artists.

Sometimes Terry takes requests for drawings, but mostly, she does her own work. She started an Instagram account in 2015 where she posts pictures of the drawings she has completed.

“I do often draw portraits and pictures for my friends, but oftentimes I’m too busy to do commissions,” Terry said.

Terry enjoys art from the impressionist period, and one of her favorite artists is Damien Hirst because of his wild abstract paintings and ideas. Because of this influence, Terry often draws pictures and portraits that look like optical illusions.

“My favorite thing about art is how you can make art with a meaning, but the meaning changes and molds to the eye of the viewer,” Terry said.

Terry will continue to draw portraits and pictures for herself and her friends and post it on Instagram to share her passion for art. She hopes to pursue art all throughout her life.

“Hopefully art will continue to be a part of my life,” Terry said. “I would love to pursue an art-related career at the moment, but I’m waiting to see where my path leads me.”
