The Mira Costa Jazz band has kept their spirits high during the challenging times of COVID-19 with virtual performances available to the entire Costa community.
Members of the Mira Costa Jazz band created their first virtual performance to the song “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5 on April 16. The performance was directed by Jazz Band teacher and director Joel Carlson and students played their instruments in their own homes.
“When we learned that school would be cancelled and that our Washington DC trip was cancelled, the band was bummed that we couldn’t play together,” Costa Jazz Band student Dexter Brown said. “The virtual performances allow us to come back together and make music despite not being able to spend time together. “I Want You Back” was chosen to lift people’s spirits in a time of hardship. We just want to make people happy.”
Junior Ethan Nahlinder edited the video and professional audio engineer Joel Mankey produced the version of the song “I Want You Back” seen in the performance. According to Carlson in the video, Mankey gave techniques and guided the band throughout the performance.
“The Band plans to release another video in the next week from the whole band, and then each of the four ensembles will be recording one of their pieces from the DC trip,” Brown said. “Stay tuned to the MCHS Band’s Youtube channel!”
