With personal details and anecdotes regarding the origins of each song from his debut studio album, “Sing to me Instead”, the Netflix special is a great choice for both fans of Platt and anyone who loves good music.
Platt’s incredibly talented vocals and gorgeous music combined with heartfelt lyrics based on true events make for an emotional and inspiring performance. Although the pacing was awkward at times, the cheerfulness and excitement of both Platt and the audience more than made up for it.
“Ben Platt Live from Radio City Music Hall” is a Netflix special on Platt’s concert featuring songs from his first pop album. He released his album “Sing to me Instead” in an effort to break away from his musical theater roots and establish himself as a pop singer. Until now, Platt is most commonly recognized for his starring role in the Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen.
“Sing to me Instead” was written with the general theme of reflection based on Platt’s past relationships and his career journey that started when he was nine years old. With songs about growing up and growing within a relationship, each song performed has a personal meaning which adds genuineness and sincerity.
Platt’s brilliant vocals are by far the best aspect of this film. Between his stunning vibrato, masterful runs, and incredible tone, the vocals are what sets this music documentary apart from others.
The lyrics of each song he performs all reflect a significant moment in his life such as “Hurt me Once” which discusses the end of a relationship. All of his lyrics are sincere, simple, and relatable with a generally positive and clear message. Many of the feelings portrayed through the lyrics in the various songs are relatable to most in some way or another.
The music complements the lyrics in a flawless balance. With incredibly talented backup singers to augment his brilliant lyrics and vocals, every song has the perfect balance to portray its message and provide an entertaining yet simple performance.
The pacing of the filmed concert was at times abrupt, rushed, or awkward. However, it became slower and more natural as Platt’s nerves calmed down and he got more comfortable on stage. His evident nerves and over-excitement were distracting at first but once it was resolved, the movie was nothing but enjoyable.
In between songs, Platt spoke about his personal experiences in the LGBTQ community, dating, and growing up which provided the inspiration for his songs. This allowed the audience to connect with him on a more personal level and to more deeply understand the meaning of his songs.
Platt’s positive reflection on his life thus far made for an incredible album and a spectacular music documentary. Between the heartfelt and relatable lyrics, stunning vocals, and magnificent music, this movie is a must-watch for all music lovers.
Released on May 20, the music documentary is rated TV-PG and is available to stream on Netflix.
