Mira Costa Sports Teams Continue to Practice Through Zoom

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Mira Costa athletic department has taken a major hit. Some of the Costa sports teams have been continuing their practices through online programs, such as Zoom, since the closing of Manhattan Beach Unified School District schools on Mar. 16.
The closure of MBUSD schools has heavily affected the life of all high school athletes by immediately canceling all on-campus and off-campus activities, such as practices and games.. At the time, students were still allowed to take part in their sports through practices up until the schools in the district closed.
“We were able to keep practicing and race with other students on the Costa team until the day the schools closed,” junior track and field member Brooke Kelly said. “We were definitely expecting practices to get canceled.”
With physical meetings for sports or any school activities canceled, Costa’s athletic programs have been struggling with finding ways to keep students active, in shape, and condition for their sport. Coaches and students have been working together to find a solution, such as video calls or daily exercises, to fix this problem.
“We haven’t had any official practices since the school closed,” Kelly said. “But we have been assigned workouts almost every day.”
Some sports, such as the dance team, have been meeting for practices via Zoom. Despite the disadvantage of not being able to practice normally, teams are still continuing to do their best in order to keep their spirits up and maintain a positive attitude throughout this time.
“The dance meetings are obviously a lot different than they used to be,” junior Katie Lieb said. “We still put in the same effort and try our hardest to get the most out of the practices.”
Unfortunately, some teams are unable to meet on Zoom or other video calling platforms because of the nature of the sports. For example, the track and field team is not hosting these online practices. Instead, they have been following routines and checking in online.
“It’s harder for us to have us have meetings track,” Kelly said. “The most we can really do is run on our own and follow the workouts that our coaches give us.”
In the events of CoronaVirus, students remain hopeful of the continuation of their sports throughout next year’s season. The athletics department remains optimistic about the continuation of all sports.
“Everyone is just trying to do the best they can,” Leib said. “We all just want to go back to normal practices.”
Mira Costa has yet to make any further comments about the reopening of the school next fall. There have also been no official announcements regarding summer and fall sports, but students still remain hopeful.
“I hope sports continue next fall,” Leib said.“I really don’t want to lose my senior football season.”
