Costa’s ASB hosts spring blood drive amid school closure
Costa’s Associated Student Body partnered with the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center to host their annual blood drive on May 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Clark Building in Hermosa Beach.
Due to school closure, the blood drive, which is normally held in the cafeteria or gym, could not occur on Costa’s campus. Instead, organizers rented out the Clark Building in Hermosa Beach and implemented strict social distancing guidelines. ASB students could not volunteer this year but recruited blood donors from home.
“ASB students do a lot when it comes to the blood drive. We have to recruit six non-ASB people to donate, and we have to work during one period outside of our ASB class period,” junior Cia Conley said. “For last Wednesday, things were obviously different. Every ASB person only had to recruit two people, and no one was required to work.”
Blood collection is considered an essential service, which is why the event was able to happen amid the stay at home orders issued by the state. Due to cancellations of blood drives because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center was in urgent need of blood donations before the drive.
“I love the blood drive, and I think it’s super important to donate and help those who need it,” Conley said. “I don’t think having a blood drive at this time was risky because everything was spaced out and done in a very clean manner.”
