“Chemical Hearts” draws viewers in with an emotional back story, but fails to meet the expectations of an unremarkable romance film.
The film excels with building watchers up with an emotional connection between two characters, but lacks a strong plot. The ending is unmemorable and many scenes and side characters were pointless for the storyline.
Released on Aug. 21, “Chemical Hearts” is directed by Richard Tanne. The film stars Lili Reinhart as Grace Town and Austin Abrams as Henry Page.
“Chemical Hearts” brings viewers through an emotional journey of a high school senior, Austin Abrams, falling in love with the new transfer student, Grace Town, who hides a gut-wrenching secret from her past.
The backstory of the film builds up an intense secret that foreshadows a story of immense comeback. However, the secret was not all it was built up to be and ultimately just leaves viewers in disbelief that they thought it would alter the whole plot. The film was a bore, and without a solid plot, it couldn’t succeed.
“Chemical Hearts” includes several scenes in the movie as well as side characters that serve no purpose to the overall development of the plot. These additions merely make the film more confusing and hard to follow.
The film provides a message that recovery takes time. Although “Chemical Hearts” lacked proper focus, this message was clear throughout the entirety of the film. This was the only sense of drive that the movie had, as well as being the only thing that kept this film from being completely tasteless.
Although the film lacks a substantial plot, actress Lili Reinhart makes up for it with her amazing skills. She embraces her character, making the audience feel as though her fictional character in a made-up town was a reality. Notably, her emotional scenes bring viewers through a whirlwind.
In the end, the films underdeveloped plot and senseless scenes leave viewers bored and unfulfilled. “Chemical Hearts” sets its watchers up with the expectation of a beautiful, twisted love story, but fails to live up to that standard.
Released on Aug. 21, “Chemical Hearts” is rated R and is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
