Costa’s Associated Student Body hosted a blood drive in collaboration with UCLA on Sept. 23, where they broke a record for the amount of blood units donated.

Last May, Costa collected 34 blood units at their annual blood drive, setting a record with UCLA. This September, they broke that record again, taking in a total of 72 blood units.

“We made sure to sign people up that we knew were going to donate,” senior and ASB member Cia Conley said. “Almost everyone we signed up attended and donated,”.

ASB held the blood drive at the Clark Building in Hermosa Beach, and donors were instructed to register beforehand online. Lisa Claypoole, Costa Activities Director, assisted the students with the blood drive.

“Hosting the blood drive during the pandemic was not as difficult as it was in the spring during the beginning of the pandemic because we knew what was going to happen this time,” Conley said. “We had to take into consideration several safety precautions for all of the donors. There was social distancing and everyone had their own time slot.”
