Officer Donovan Torres accepted the new resource officer position at Costa for the 2020-21 school year, allowing him to combine his two passions of teaching and law enforcement.
Officer Torres held law enforcement positions for ten years and hopes to provide a sense of security and safety for all students and staff when a return to campus occurs. He will also be available for mentoring, counseling and building relationships with students so they can feel more comfortable on campus.
“This unique assignment allows me to use my Bachelor degree in teaching and my experience in law enforcement so I can pursue them both at once,” Officer Torres said in an introduction video to Costa students. “I want to make sure my office is warm and inviting and I welcome everyone to come in.”
Before working in Manhattan Beach, Torres worked with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for five years doing corrections and transportation. During his time with the Manhattan Beach Police Department, he worked on collaborative assignments with CSI, Swat Team, Honor Guard and now as the school resource officer.
“What I’m looking to do is to build relationships with people,” Torres said. “Law enforcement is not primarily what I am going to be doing, but rather mentoring, counseling, and just making it comfortable for students to come and talk to me. When we come back on campus my doors are going to be open.”
