Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cheer practices had been canceled since the middle of March. Now, Costa is starting to allow various sports to practice on campus, including the Costa cheer team.
Every year, the cheer team participates in competitions where JV and varsity compete in separate divisions. The two divisions include non-tumbling and tumbling for both JV and varsity. Tumbling is for the girls that use tricks like jumping, rolling, flipping, etc. To qualify for Nationals, a team must place as one of the top three teams in the regional competition, while also competing in two high school competitions.
“I think this year we may not have a competition season, but we are going to prepare as though we will have a competition in the future,” varsity senior Jordan Bailey said. “If there is a competition season, there will definitely be new restrictions, but any type of competition season would be great.”
According to Bailey, the cheer team traditionally begins practicing a few months before the competition season. Even during the pandemic, the team has been practicing in advance for future competitions. If varsity and JV qualify for finals at Nationals, they hope to compete in Orlando, Florida.
“I was really looking forward to participating in this year’s competition season,” JV freshman Ella Naidoo said. “We are all still practicing very hard as we are hoping to compete in future competitions.”
