Euphoria’s one-hour special episode, “Part 1: Rue,” tells a poignant story through Zendaya’s astonishing, raw performance.
In an intense fashion similar to its first season, “Part 1: Rue” is an incredible display of paramount writing and flawless acting. With beautiful direction and a dedication to raw storytelling, the show’s special holiday episode proves just how powerful and salient television can be.
Released on Dec. 6, Euphoria’s special episode “Part 1: Rue,” is written and directed by Sam Levinson, the show’s creator. The episode stars Zendaya as Rue Bennett, and includes appearances from the first season’s cast, including Hunter Schaffer as Jules Vaughan and Colman Domingo as Ali.
The episode’s entirety takes place on Christmas Eve in a diner in Rue’s hometown, as she discusses several important aspects of life with her sponsor, Ali. While the beginning of the special illustrates Rue’s dream life, living in an apartment with her girlfriend Jules, the audience is quickly transferred to reality, in which she is a relapsing drug addict in her hometown.
Zendaya’s incredible performance proves itself to be the episode’s strongest superpower. Her raw, realistic delivery is an incredibly special skill that aids the audience in feeling deeply for a character that is so flawed and unique, that she seems real. Additionally, the emotional complexity of her acting creates an unforgettable experience that follows the viewer long after the episode is over.
The intricate blend of poignant writing and purposeful direction also allows the show to capitalize off of its intense subject matter. The entirety of the episode occurs in a diner, and simply follows a conversation between Rue and her sponsor, Ali. Despite the stagnant setting, the episode captures its audience’s attention unwaveringly. Levinson’s directing style and strong script are a dynamic duo, and provide an unmatched viewing experience.
Although the first season of “Euphoria,” known widely for its campy style and dramatized cinematography, “Part 1: Rue” diverts slightly in that the dialogue is put at the forefront. Despite this shift in visual style, fans of the show’s portrayal of important themes will appreciate its mercurial tonal change.
Euphoria’s special episode, “Part 1: Rue,” is a fantastic display of storytelling, and compels its audience until the very end. With a flawless performance from Zendaya and strong writing, the special is a must-watch for fans of the show and single-time watchers alike.
Released on Dec. 6, “Part 1: Rue” is rated TV-MA and is available to stream on HBO Max. The special’s second and final part, “Part 2: Jules,” will release on Jan. 25.
