On Jan. 19, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) announced that the championships for all fall sports are officially cancelled. However, the statement read that fall sports could still continue their season if they were approved by local government. This means that the Southern Section championships would still be cancelled.

“I am sad that CIF cancelled fall sports because this is my first year on varsity indoor and I was looking forward to playing,” junior girls volleyball player Cassidy Antrobius said. “I understand the circumstances as big groups cannot socialize, but I do think that there are precautions CIF could take to make it safe enough for teams to play.”

According to the official announcement made by CIF, the CIF-SS (Southern Section) cancelled the championship because most of California is in the purple tier, meaning the COVID-19 cases within the area were considered widespread. Until California makes substantial progress toward the orange tier, which would mean the cases were considered moderate, the championship cannot be held.

“It would be very fun if CIF hosted spring championships because that gives us more time for the number of the coronavirus cases to settle, and it allows us to play this season,” Antrobius said. “Even if it is just one tournament, I really want the opportunity for my team to be able to play.”

The CIF announcement also states that spring sports will continue as scheduled in the official CIF calendar. As for the spring Southern Section championship tournaments, CIF will make a decision in either April or May on whether or not it will be able to hold the competition.

“When sports return, I am most looking forward to seeing my teammates and being able to play in the new gym,” Antrobius said. “It will be very fun to compete against other schools and have fans in the stands. I mainly miss the overall competition and seeing all of the Costa students at the games.”
