Mira Costa is famous for its arts program, with its award-winning orchestras, bands, and choirs. Students in these organizations not only display their amazing talents during school hours and practice, but go on to represent our school, winning both local and state competitions. However, sometimes as students, we just want to use art to express ourselves. Sometimes, we just want to sing for fun.
At least that was junior Jackie Cravello’s idea when she proposed the creation of Glee Club. She first came up with the idea after watching Fox’s new show, “Glee,” a program about a small band of students who take part in their school’s Glee Club and perform songs.
“I was in choir and my schedule didn’t work out and I knew there were other people in that position, and we saw the show and thought ‘Hey lets just get all our friends together and sing.’ I never thought about singing club before,” Cravello said.
Although the club on the show sings and performs in competitions, Mira Costa’s new club has slightly more modest goals. The members of the club may decide to perform benefit concerts or sing for the community, however, their main purpose is to simply perform popular songs for fun.
“Our goals are to spread music to people and to allow people who don’t know if they have singing talents to sing for fun, we also want to give back to the community and sing for the public,” Cravello said.
Although choirs at Costa often sing traditional music, the Glee club will be focusing on singing more modern and popular songs. If it is approved, members of the Glee Club will be able to learn group numbers such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, and “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, as well as songs by the British artist Imogen Heap.
“I’m joining Glee Club because I’m in choir and I love choir, but I would like to attempt to sing more popular songs. I would also like to make choir more popular to the rest of the students,” senior Gabrielle Gold said.
If the club is approved, all prospective singers will be welcome, not only choir members. Cravello hopes that those who like singing but aren’t in choir will decide to join the club, along with others who simply enjoy popular music.
“It’s for anyone who likes to sing. It’s for people who don’t have time for choir or can’t fit it into their schedules; it’s a good chance for them to sing on campus,” Cravello said.
Currently, Glee Club does not exist on campus. In order to become a school club, Cravello must complete the necessary forms and present her idea to a small group of students from ASB. They will in turn present the idea to student government as a whole and decide whether or not the club should be created.
“Hopefully we will start meeting within the next month,” Cravello said.
If the club is approved, Glee Club will begin meeting on Fridays in Mr. Hayden’s room, room RG16. Mr. Hayden, the choir director, will be the advisor for the club. If it is approved, it will have quite a following, for there are already sixty-five members on the club’s facebook page. Overall however, Cravello hopes that the club will be approved and inspire all singers of all abilities to raise their voices.
“I just think that it would be fun for people to join it. So even if you don’t think that you’re an amazing singer, come join and be a part of something,” Cravello said.
